(D2 EE) I Love Bread

[Varina Ordo]

Though Varina had gotten accustomed to hunting and foraging for her food, she still loved things that required a factory or an artisan. She (no questions please) had secured herself a baguette. To cut through the tasteful thickness of it, she used one of her hunting knives. Right before the first slice, she paused and looked at it. Eh, even if there are germs on it, my immune system needs the training. To top it all off, she added Meat from Assorted Animals that she had personally murdered herself.

Since she had been thinking about appreciation lately, she wondered if the Rebuilders would like her more if she killed more animals for them. It would be hard not to eat it herself, though...

Garen, on the other hand, had gotten himself a full plate full of various sorts of food. Meat, vegetables, and yes, bread.

He sat down across from Varina, frowning. "That's not all you're eating, is it?"

Varina paused mid-bite, about to devour another bit. She closed her jaw, set down her food, then raised a brow. "Yeah? Bread makes the meat more palatable." Her food wasn't the most appetizing... It wasn't like she was so good at balancing out sauces.

Garen frowned down at her plate. "It's important to eat a balanced meal. Meat, bread vegetables, fruit. Anything on there you don't have needs to be made up another way."

Spooning up a few veggies from his plate, he deposited it on hers. "Here, try that. It's good for you." He nodded to her.

How many times had she heard this conversation? Actually, not a lot, considering that she didn't cook back with her dad and lived by herself or with another teenage dirtbag most of the time... But still! It was annoying!

Fortunately for her, she had a secret weapon up her sleeve. Several, in fact, but one in particular for this conversation. "Actually, that's why I always bring these around," Varina said, pulling out a pill case afterwards. "Thanks for reminding me to take my multivitamin." She plopped it into her mouth and looked for her glass of water. Dang, she'd forgotten that! Well, dry-swallowing pills never hurt anybody, even if it sucked.

"Hey!" Varina glanced down at the veggies then back at him. "I didn't ask for those!"

Garen watched, eyebrows up a little, as Varina awkwardly swallowed a pill.

Then he frowned. "You should eat them. They're good for you! I didn't get this big by not eating my vegetables." He demonstrated by taking a bite of some of his remaining veggies, stopping just short of some theatrical mmm sounds. He was, in fact, LARGE.

There was no mistaking that Garen was particularly LARGE. "Ugh, well, I can see that you won't let me say no." Varina jabbed at the asparagus then examined it. After shrugging, she took a massive bite to get it all over with.

She chewed. Oh she chewed. Most importantly, it was far better prepared than anything she ever made for herself. "It's okay," she concluded, setting down her fork. "Just okay." She glowered at him then took another bite.

Garen chuckled. "Well, even if it's just okay, it's good for you." He said. "Unfortunately, a lot of things that are just okay are."

He took a bite of his meat. "So. How are you settling in? I know you only come by here sometimes. You've picked a good time." He didn't sound as though he was joking.

[Varina Ordo]

"I think if I was worried about what's good for me, then I wouldn't be fighting all the time." Varina subconsciously tapped her metallic foot against the floor. When she realized it, she tensed up and took another bite. Asparagus was better than whatever random plants she ate in the wild.

After she finished her latest bite, she looked around idly. "Oh, well, I figured you weirdos needed help." She raised a brow at him. Was he the type to wear his armor at dinner? If he was, then he was definitely one of the weirdos! Base time was meant for cool clothes.

Garen wasn't wearing his helmet, but he was wearing his armor. Well, not the gauntlets; it was too hard to eat with them on. But everything else.

He chuckled at her. "Well, fighting for the right reason is it's own kind of good. Defending the Clan, even if we are a bunch of weirdoes." He shrugged. "I suppose there's probably a few sorts of fighting that aren't great, but nothing I've read about Mandalorians has much about bad fighting."

Unable to resist the bread for long, Varina ripped off another chunk. "Anyone ever tell you you're a lot like Soleene? It's like you guys sleep in your armor."

Varina pressed her lips together. "Well, there's the cost of fighting. Kind of sucks." She considered eating again but paused to look at him. "Come to think of it, you're not like Soleene. You're too cheerful all the damn time."

"Soleene's a good sort." Garen said, nodding. "I'll take that as a compliment. I don't sleep in my armor, although I could." He frowned at her. "You could too, if the fit's done right. You want me to take a look? You'd want the Forgemaster for big changes, but I can handle something like that."

The comment made Garen blink. He chuckled, softly, setting down his fork. "Too cheerful? I haven't often heard that. What's so cheerful about me?"

"My armor is fitted to me," Varina said, scratching her head. It did get a little stuffy in there sometimes. "I guess it wouldn't hurt to have you look, but only if you wanna." There was no way she was going to get indebted to... Well, this guy!

Especially because he was one of the weirdos. "You're always like... Uhh... 'We know our duty and we will do it! We fight for our honor as Mandalorians!' " She coughed afterwards as if she'd eaten something rotten. Or coughing up a hairball?

Garen gave a little indifferent shrug. "Up to you." For a few moments, he focused on eating.

Her additional comments made him chuckle again. "Well, I suppose. It's good to have a duty and to know what it is. Honor's alright, I suppose." His eyes narrowed as he studied Varina. "What do you think about those things?"

Varina glowered at Garen as they both ate. Adults are always like this! Blah, blah, blah, make your choice. She nibbled on more asparagus as she looked over his armor. After a short scowl, she said, "Okay. Maybe I'll swing on by."

For whatever reason, she had expected him to yell more about honor. "Those things? I dunno, feels like stuff we tell ourselves to get us to just do it. But why not just do it anyways, you know?" Varina reached over for more bread but paused to look at him again. ", And I dunno why you care."
